Portals of Possibility is an exhibition by urban theorist and experimentalist Lauren Hood and the Institute for AfroUrbanism, a Detroit-based platform exploring the relationship between place, potential, and horizons of possibility. IAU began with a provocation: What becomes visible when we study Black life through agency, abundance, and audacity rather than through deficit and constraint? Since 2021, the Black Thriving Index has gathered in-depth qualitative interviews with Black luminaries across global geographies and generations to understand the conditions that have enabled them to live fully expressed, self-authored lives. What we heard complicated the question. Thriving was not simply a matter of individual capacity. People pointed instead to the conditions that allowed more of themselves to emerge: people, places, resources, relationships, encounters, and experiences that expanded what they could imagine for themselves and the worlds around them. Portals of Possibility Invites you Into that Inquiry: What allows us to envision and inhabit lives beyond our current conditions?
